Coaching is a form of development for an individual which involves advice from another person. Sometimes known as a meta-profession, coaching can apply to supporting clients in endeavors ranging from spirituality and political to personal and professional issues. In addition, coaching approaches and techniques are often influenced by cultural norms and values. As such, while one type of coaching may be accepted in the United States, the same coaching techniques may differ in other countries or cultures.

While individuals with ADHD need to be under the care of a health care provider, there are special coaching techniques which these individuals can learn to help manage the condition. In fact, a book written by Edward Hallowell and J. Ratey titled Driven to Distraction can provide insight into this specialized style of coaching. In this type of coaching, clients learn how to complete projects and set goals by learning time management skills.

ADHD coaches do not provide any form of treatment or therapy. Rather, the focus is to help the individual learn how to function on a daily basis to help calm behavioral issues. For, as with applied behavior analysis and other psychological programs, when an individual changes the environment, behavioral changes often follow. While this is the case, it is important that if a client needs psychological help, the coach recommend the individual seek help from a professional health care provider.

In most cases, life coaches are not certified or licensed though do have experience in a number of different areas. In addition, these individuals often have different social and political views from clients. Whereas, the practices and principals of individuals working through different agencies whether church or secular based also tend to have different cultural values and norms.
