Exploring Online Negotiation Training Courses

By Beryl Dalton

There are two year colleges, four year universities, graduate schools and others which offer online and on-campus coursework. One of the most popular programs now online is that of online negotiation training, a training program which can benefit people on many different levels. In life, love, religion, school, and business, quality negotiations are the key to success.

As the coursework is quite varied among different types of negotiation, individuals learn a great deal from this type of course. Whether positional or interest-based, learning how to negotiate can help individuals in many different areas of life. Whether negotiating travel plans, setting up a business, selling a house, getting married or obtaining a divorce, negotiations exist in almost every aspect of life.

Generally course leaders will provide a number of different scenarios for students to work through, either alone, or in groups. As the course is related to negotiation, there is often more group than individual work involved in most assignments. Depending on the area, there may also be courses which involve real life negotiations as part of the overall coursework.

Once a distance learning student is set up with the proper icons, the learning and hard work begin. Each character is generally programmed to ask questions, often very tough questions which the student must answer, then report any emotional responses along with the answers to the instructor. After which, the instructor looks to see how the character, or avatar responded to the ability of the student to negotiate.

Obtaining and providing good deals is nothing less than art. Unfortunately, unlike pure art, it is not a gift most people have from birth. As such, those working in fields in which negotiations are part of daily life often need to complete this type course to be as successful as possible when it comes to negotiating on a professional level. Those who negotiate on a personal basis with family, friends, roommates and others have also found these courses to be quite beneficial.

While most exercises are based on real world events, simulated experiences often allow students to act in ways that would otherwise not be accepted in the real world. There are far more real world experiences throughout the terms of the course with a variety of subjects and topics depending on the area in which the course may be offered.

Once having obtained the best, or a great deal, it is important to review any notes so as to remember how to do so in real life. A number of students hold on to notes from these type courses throughout life as there are many lessons learned which will no doubt come in helpful at a later date. As such, having notes as a reference can often help people continue to get better deals once the training as complete.

Attendees often have great things to say about online and on-campus programs in negotiation. Often reported as being quite realistic, many hold that the scenarios and situations each had to work through was the best learning aspect of the course. There are others who do poorly and suggest the course while a great one, is just something that might not be for everyone.
