By Enid Hinton

Every time we turn on our televisions or listen to the radio we hear of disasters occurring in different parts of the world. This disasters range from natural phenomena such as earthquakes, hurricanes to man-made accidents such as oil spills and nuclear plant leaks. The Disaster relief ministry is an initiative that aims to get people to be more proactively involved in mitigating the effects of these disasters.

Most people can vividly remember the dreadful images that accompany these disasters. They are desperate cries of mothers, who want to be reunited with their children. They are pitiful moans of those who have been injured and as always the nauseating stench of death.

In disaster situations they are people who are always who may need blood urgently. You can assist by donating blood to these relief agencies. This you do not have to do only at the time of crisis. Be proactive and go to any of the blood donation centers that are around you.

You may have received e-mails from some of these organizations. Never mind that there goals or profiles are not clear, they are insistent to the point of irritation. They regularly send messages to your inbox which at times you can mistake for spam. Some of them go the extra mile by sending their solicitations directly to your physical mail. Others will use the print media or go for a wider audience by flooding the Television networks with pleas for donations.

In other instances, Governments are the ones behind these relief agencies. The Government understands the role played by these agencies is crucial and they are more motivated to deal with these situations. To this end a proper regulatory framework is set up to oversee their activities in the country.

The disaster victims need items such as food and clothes. You can donate these items to them. This can come from the excess you have or purchase them. Once you have done this make sure you contact the relief organizations and task them to distribute them to the victims.

The materials can consist of food, clothes, housing materials and medicines to ease the suffering of the affected. Key among all this needs is finances. The main form of contribution to these agencies is money which is sent via many mediums. Thus said financial contributions are very important.

This usually comprises of ensuring both conflicting parties know of your mission and agree to let you operate free of reprisals and attacks. After establishing the facts on the ground decisions such as number of people to be sent and sum of materials are next. These decisions are crucial and can affect the lives of many victims.
