By Thomson Dorfman

Sometimes we like them, sometimes we don't. Others come with kindness, however the rest are simply opposite. Neighbors, they are inevitable. Whether you reside in a typical home ground, apartment, condo or beach lake cottage, they are simply part of the community just like you.

Its a fact of geography, civil engineering & town planning that adjacent neighbors are facts of modern life and lifestyles . Some people are lucky to have "quiet-often not at home neighbors" which is equivalent of not having neighbors at all. However, other homeowners are stuck with the not-so-good neighbors, who are hard to deal with even during a holy Sunday morning. Most often than not, our neighbors especially those not so good ones are the primary reason why we build fences, this happens after a toilsome discussion or rather argument that we had regarding our issue with our neighbors.

Other than cultural, personal, and other noted differences, setting property lines and boundaries among neighbors tend to create numerous arguments. If you are planning to install a fence, it's a good idea to ask each neighbor from every side for their opinions regarding how your plans would affect theirs. Through that, you can assure your good relationship with your neighbors and have the fence you want as well. There are certain regulations that should be followed in building a fence, be sure to check your state and local regulations regarding this matter. Following the rules would protect you from any legality issues that your neighbor might complain. In some areas, neighbors are required to share the cost of the planned property line fence. If you properly discuss it with your neighbors, you might be surprised that they are interested on you beautification project.

In case you had purchased a house with a hideous fence which unfortunately a shared one, it's a good idea to take things slowly and cautiously. As a new resident in the neighborhood, you can't just make a scene and demolish the fence whenever you want to. Since your intentions are good, you can politely introduce yourself to your new neighbors. Talk with them and let them know that you are thinking about replacing the fence and ask them whether they are interested in doing it as a joint venture.

As much as you wanted to keep your property neat, there would a process and people to deal with. You should open your mind with objections and just move on. It's far better not to have neighbors as enemies than having a neat fence.
